THE LA MER APPROACH
THE TEACHER IS THE FIRST LESSON.
We have become very good at asking children what they should know.
What should they learn?
What should they achieve?
What should they become?
But there is another question we rarely ask.
Who is teaching them?
A teacher can teach purpose without having discovered their own. They can teach resilience without knowing how to care for themselves. They can teach connection while feeling disconnected. They can teach healthy living while neglecting their own body. They can teach integrity without examining their own. And they can teach happiness without understanding what it means to live well.
The La Mer Approach begins here.
Before we requalify the learner, we requalify the teacher.
THE REQUALIFIED TEACHER
Requalification is not about adding another qualification to a teacher’s CV. It is about expanding the person behind the qualification. We invite teachers to step beyond the traditional boundaries of professional development and consider the whole of who they are.
Body.
Mind.
Heart.
Spirit.
Soul.
Because the quality of a school cannot ultimately exceed the quality of the culture within it. And culture is created by people.
THE LA MER DIMENSIONS
NOURISHMENT & SUSTAINING ONE’S LEGACY
We explore the relationship between what we consume, how we care for ourselves and what we leave behind. Nourishment is physical. But it is also intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual.
We ask:
What are you putting into yourself — and what are you putting into the world?
VISIONARY BLUEPRINT
Purpose begins with knowing where you are going.
We help teachers explore identity, ambition, values, purpose and possibility, developing a personal blueprint for a life that is intentional rather than simply busy.
Because a person cannot meaningfully guide another towards their future if they have never considered their own.
HUMAN CONNECTEDNESS
Before there is learning, there is relationship. We explore belonging, empathy, communication, trust, compassion and the extraordinary power of being genuinely seen. Because people learn differently when they feel that they matter.
INTEGRITY
Integrity is what remains when nobody is watching. It is the alignment between what we believe, what we say and how we live. We help teachers examine the values they model every day, because children learn far more from what adults consistently do than from what adults occasionally say.
PHYSICAL CARE
The body is not separate from learning.
Sleep.
Movement.
Food.
Energy.
Rest.
Breath.
Environment.
We consider what it means to care for the physical self, not as another responsibility, but as the foundation from which we live, lead and teach.
SPIRITUALITY
We make space for the questions beneath achievement. What gives life meaning? What do we belong to? What do we believe? What grounds us? What is bigger than ourselves? Spirituality, approached with respect for each person’s worldview, allows education to move beyond performance and towards meaning.
FROM THE INDIVIDUAL TO THE SCHOOL
The La Mer Approach begins with the individual. But it does not end there. When teachers begin to understand themselves differently, relationships change. When relationships change, culture changes. When culture changes, the experience of school changes. And when the experience of school changes, learners change.
This is how we work.
Person → Relationship → Culture → Learner
Rather than another program placed on top of a school. This is a deeper way of being within it.
THE LA MER PROMISE
La Mer creates the conditions for them to discover who they already have the capacity to become. Because the greatest gift a teacher can give a learner is not simply knowledge.
It is an example of a life well lived.
THE TEACHER IS THE FIRST LESSON.
That is The La Mer Approach.
JUST HAPPINESS
Happiness is not the absence of difficulty. It is the capacity to experience meaning, connection, gratitude, belonging and possibility. We believe happiness is cultivated. Through how we live. How we lead. How we connect. How we nourish. How we serve. How we choose to see the world.
Just Happiness is not the destination.
It is the culture.
